The Bittorrent P2P File-Sharing System: Measurements and Analysis

چکیده
Of the many P2P file-sharing prototypes in existence, BitTorrent is one of the few that has managed to attract millions of users. BitTorrent relies on other (global) components for file search, employs a moderator system to ensure the integrity of file data, and uses a bartering technique for downloading in order to prevent users from freeriding. In this paper we present a measurement study of BitTorrent in which we focus on four issues, viz. availability, integrity, flashcrowd handling, and download performance. The purpose of this paper is to aid in the understanding of a real P2P system that apparently has the right mechanisms to attract a large user community, to provide measurement data that may be useful in modeling P2P systems, and to identify design issues in such

Characterization of BitTorrent Traffic in a Broadband Access Network
BitTorrent as one of the leading P2P file sharing applications has dominant traffic in broadband access networks. In this paper we present the main characteristics of BitTorrent traffic based on actual measurements taken from a commercial network. Analysis results at both applicationand flow-levels are presented and discussed.

An emerging paradigm in peer-to-peer (P2P) networks is to explicitly consider incentives as part of the protocol design in order to promote good (or discourage bad) behavior. However, effective incentives are hampered by the challenges of a P2P environment, e.g. transient users and no central authority. In this paper, we quantify these challenges, reporting the results of a month-long measureme...
متن کاملAnalysing the Security of Incentive Schemes in P2P-based File-sharing Systems
For Peer-to-Peer (P2P) file-sharing services cooperation is essential. However, peers behave rationally and try to maximise their benefits, while minimising their effort. To increase system performance incentive schemes are used to enforce cooperation. Nonetheless, so called free-riders and malicious peers try to attack these incentive schemes. In this paper we will first explain two popular P2...
متن کاملIncentivizing Cooperation in P2P File Sharing - Indirect Interaction as an Incentive to Seed
The fundamental problem with P2P networks is that quality of service depends on altruistic resource sharing by participating peers. Many peers freeride on the generosity of others. Current solutions like sharing ratio enforcement and reputation systems are complex, exploitable, inaccurate or unfair at times. The need to design scalable mechanisms that incentivize cooperation is evident. We focu...
متن کاملA Measurement Study of the BitTorrent Peer-to-Peer File-Sharing System
P2P systems for sharing content have become very popular over the last few years. However, despite the increasing attention of both the research community and large numbers of users, the actual behavior of these systems over prolonged periods of time is still poorly understood. This paper presents a detailed measurement study over a period of eight months of BitTorrent/Suprnova, a P2P file-shar...
